History
Kinetiko listed in 2011 as a coal bed methane explorer, found a large South African gas resource, spent years in partner disputes and suspension, and by August 2026 was moving toward first gas sales on thin cash.
2011-2012: Listing and the Amersfoort discovery
Kinetiko listed in mid-2011 with an IPO at 20 cents a share, aiming to raise $8 million, with up to $2 million more in oversubscriptions. It was a coal bed methane explorer (gas held in coal seams) and its prospectus called the investment speculative. In September 2011 PASA accepted its application for a Technical Commercial Permit over about 4,200 km² south of Amersfoort, and the first Amersfoort hole was completed in October 2011. Gas showed up quickly. By February 2012 the consultant Gustavson supported a 1.12 tcf contingent resource, which the company called a confirmed discovery. In June 2012 all four pending permit applications were granted, covering 7,911 km². In August the estimate rose to 1.5 tcf after shallow sandstone gas turned up in all ten holes. A placement of about $3 million at 18 cents followed in December. Shares on issue rose from 57.6 million at the end of 2011 to 77.35 million a year later.
2013-2015: Pilot wells, partner trouble and a new structure
Pilot wells gave mixed results. KA-03PT flowed 332 Mscf/day in March 2013, but its redrilled neighbour KA-10PTR managed only 45 Mscf/day. Partner Badimo Gas fell behind on cash calls, forcing drilling to pause in June 2013 before it paid about $1.1 million in July. The company applied for Botswana tenure in May 2013, and 12 prospecting licences were granted in November 2014. A December 2013 placement raised about $1.7 million at 15 cents. In January 2014 managing director Andrew Lambert was terminated. An April 2014 review found the gas came mostly from sandstones rather than coals. Badimo's unpaid calls led Kinetiko to issue a withdrawal notice in June 2014, but in April 2015 the two settled and moved Amersfoort into a new joint venture, Afro Energy, owned 51% Badimo and 49% Kinetiko. Money was tight: $550,000 of convertible notes in January 2015 and a placement at 3.5 cents in September. Shares on issue reached 189 million by the end of 2015.
2016-2020: Funding collapse and suspension
A 2016 estimate lifted contingent resources to 655.7 bcf. But in August 2016 the state-owned IDC declined to fund the Amersfoort pilot, ending the long-awaited funding. Kinetiko raised only small amounts, $850,000 at 2.5 cents in September 2016 and $305,000 in June 2017. In October 2017 it began debt recovery against Badimo, and ASX suspended the shares. The auditor issued a disclaimer because it could not access Afro Energy's records, and the $10.48 million investment in Afro was 97.5% of total assets. The record is thin until 2018, when a 2-cent entitlement offer raised about 56% of its target. Convertible loans at 2 cents came in 2019. In January 2020 the regulator renewed the Amersfoort rights and granted new ones, and the audit impasse ended. A further 2-cent offer raised about $1.28 million from shareholders, and trading resumed on 18 May 2020 after nearly three years. In July 2020 Gustavson lifted the contingent resource to 4.9 Tcf.
2021-2023: Buying out Badimo and the Korhaan wells
Approval to sell up to 500 mmscf of gas a year came in October 2020, and workovers began. In 2021 option exercises raised $1.26 million, and a placement at 10 cents raised about $2.8 million. Nick de Blocq became CEO in August 2021. Kinetiko agreed to buy Badimo's 51% of Afro Energy for shares, and drilling of the Korhaan wells began in November 2021. In April 2022 Afro signed a joint development agreement with the IDC for a field of about 20 wells. Raisings followed: a rights issue at 7.5 cents, A$5 million from Phefo Power at 9 cents, and a further A$2.95 million on Phefo's option exercise. Core holes at Majuba and in ER270 found thick gas-bearing sandstone. ASX refused a waiver on the Badimo share-issue deadline in March 2023, and a Vutomi power joint venture was terminated in April 2023. In August 2023 Sproule certified maiden 2P reserves of 6.4 BCF gross. Talent 10 committed $6.5 million at 9 cents, and the Badimo purchase completed on 21 September 2023, with 1,348,268,334 shares then on issue.
2024-2025: Disappointing wells, then a turn
In May 2024 Korhaan-1 gas ran a 1.2MW generator for a four-day trial. An entitlement offer at 6 cents raised about $5.06 million. The first production test well, 271-23PT, found no commercial gas, and the second also flowed poorly. An expert report in April 2025 blamed drilling methods, finding water and foam cut gas permeability by up to 85% in lab simulations. De Blocq stepped down at the end of 2024, and Rob Bulder became interim CEO. After cash fell to A$441,000, a June 2025 placement raised about A$2.2 million at 4 cents. With revised methods, PT10 reached a peak flow of 370 Mscfd and PT06 a peak of 1,600 Mscfd. In extended tests PT10 averaged 91 Mscfd over 40 days and PT06 164 Mscfd over 27 days, both above Sproule's 50 Mscfd threshold. A binding agreement with FFS Refiners was signed in October 2025 for a Phase 1a programme of about A$5.7 million. A November placement raised A$3.15 million at 6.5 cents.
2026: Rolling development and thin cash
In April 2026 Kinetiko announced a Rolling Cluster Development Strategy, starting with a compressed natural gas cluster at Brakfontein and targeting first gas revenue in the second or third quarter of 2027, later described as late 2027. The Field Development Plan was adopted on 1 July. Cash fell to about $479,000 in available funds at 30 June 2026. On 30 July the company secured commitments for A$5.4 million at 3 cents, well below November's 6.5 cents. Talent 10 would take A$3 million of it, subject to shareholder approval. On 19 August 2026 Afro Energy signed a co-operation agreement with Mulilo over a wind farm overlap, receiving A$1.26 million, 20% on signing and the rest at the wind project's financial close. At that date Kinetiko had no debt, about 1.54 billion shares before the placement, an interim CEO, and a search for a permanent one under way.
